Sam flipped switches, closing the cargo doors and shutting down the hover thrusters. “We still need some speed,” he thought to himself.

“Entering the atmo in ten,” the captain reported.

Sam withdrew his hand from the control sleeve to tap two buttons on the nav screen. The image changed to a cross section of the planet's atmosphere and the ship's projected path and he reinserted his hand back inside the sleeve. Sam used the remaining thrusters to change his trajectory for an orbital exit path.

As Schism's Blessing broke through into the mesosphere, there was enough friction from the small quantity of gasses to cause the view screens to turn white with fire. The captain and Sam were slammed forward against their harnesses and the captain passed out from the force. Sam struggled to keep conscious using breathing exercises he was taught in flight school.
